The Sun has finally arrived! July is certainly living up to our expectations. Before now, it has been a typical wet English summer. Here at Allspan, this means our temporary event structures and marquees have been playing a pivotal role in many outdoor events. So far this summer, our structures and marquees have provided much needed cover for some high-profile events.
From Clerkenwell Design Week to Westminster Abbey, we’ve been very much on the London event scene during May and June. There are even more exciting events ahead of us and things are just starting to heat up.
For now, let’s take a closer look at our involvement in Clerkenwell Design Week and the temporary structure that we installed for Westminster Abbey’s Summer event marquee. Finally, we can also find out about the temporary structures we installed for the Macmillan Annual House of Commons v House of Lords Tug of War.
Clerkenwell Design Week
Clerkenwell Design Week in London celebrated its 10th anniversary in May 2019.
For those that are not familiar with Clerkenwell Design Week, let us fill you in. The event is run over three days to showcase the most contemporary interior design solutions. Anyone and everyone from the interior design, architecture and construction industry congregate in Clerkenwell.
This London location is the hub of numerous designer furniture and interior showrooms all year-round. But, during these three days in May, Clerkenwell comes alive. Live music, exhibitions stands, unusual exhibits and demonstrations take place in the streets and surrounding areas. Businesses open their showroom doors for visitors to peruse without appointment, and suppliers from around the world eagerly showcase their latest products and services to buyers, architects, students and interior designers.
At this popular London design event, Allspan’s temporary event structure provides the ideal pop-up exhibition hall. For the last seven years, we have installed a structure in the heart of the action and this year was no different!
Our temporary structure took pride of place as the Elements exhibition hall in St Johns Square, just off Clerkenwell Road. It was neatly installed amid the historic and modern buildings and cobbled streets.
Inside the Elements temporary event structure, various suppliers of designer ironmongery, hardware, switch plates and architectural accessories displayed their wares.
Being part of Clerkenwell Design Week’s 10th anniversary was a special occasion for us here at Allspan, as it once again highlighted that the majority of our clients, including the organisers of Clerkenwell Design Week, return to us time and time again. So we too celebrated Clerkenwell’s longevity and take pride in being part of the journey.
About the Temporary Event Structure Installed
For those of you that would like to learn more about the specification of the temporary event structure installed for the Elements exhibition stand at Clerkenwell Design Week, this is for you.
The temporary structure installed measured 9 metres wide and 18 metres in length. The size was specified by the event organisers to house 12 exhibition stands within the Elements exhibition hall.
We’ve already mentioned that the structure was installed upon the cobbled streets. Therefore, it was necessary to provide an even platform for the exhibition stands inside. At Allspan, we are renowned for installing a solid levelled cassette flooring system within our event structures. Not only does the cassette floor system provide a level surface for guests to roam and a solid base for an exhibition stand, it also brings a level of sophistication and professionalism to an event.
When fitting the floor, an allowance was made for the electrical installation of power sockets on each stand. The flooring was then finished by the client with a combination of light green and grey carpet to define the different stand locations.
The structure itself had white opaque PVC roof and gables covers, finished with a flat white roof and gable lining and flat white pelmet. All the side walls were fitted with clear PVC Panoramic Window Walls with a central zip that would be opened throughout the day to openly welcome visitors.

House of Lords v House of Commons Tug of War
On 4th June, MPs from the House of Lords and House of Commons battled it out for the annual Macmillan Tug of War trophy. Now in its 33rd year, this charity event remains as popular as ever and continues to raise thousands of pounds for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Taking their time out from Brexit debates and leadership battles, MPs and workers from both Houses sign up to win the tug of war trophy. Spectators look on from the side-lines cheering on their favourite team. It really is a fun and light-hearted occasion that has become a key event within the Allspan calendar.
This year the event raised an incredible £180,955. According to Macmillan, this will pay for a Macmillan nurse for almost three years!
The event is held within the College Gardens at Westminster Abbey, where guests can enjoy food and drinks within the beautiful grounds. To support the event, Allspan installs a variety of structures for the spectators and sponsors hospitality.
